Institution - creating a video

There is a process to follow to make a chosen single into a music video. If EMI signed our artist then the record company would pay a video production company to make the video and it would then be made. This is done in a number of stages, here are the stages below;

Number one. The label, artist(s) and management agree what to release as a single.

Number two. The video commissioner  makes a shortlist of possible directos.

Number Three. The video commissioner sends the track with a broad brief, summarising ideas for the project, to the shortlisted.

Number four. Directors provide outline treatments to the video commissioner.

Number five. A Director is chosen and budget and deadlines are agreed.

Number six. The director develops the idea with storyboards and location photos.

Number seven. An art director, wardrobe people and director of photography are enlisted, locations are booked, sets are designed.

Number eight. The sets are built.

Number nine. All personnel are on site for the shoot (usually one or two days).

Number ten. Shooting complete, the film is transfered to the tape for editing.

Number eleven. The editor produces a rough-cut, which usually takes about three days.

Number twelve. The label, artist(s) and manager view and comment on rough-cut.

Number thirteen. Changes are agreed and made before visual effects are added.

And finally number fourteen. Online finished video is passed to label for release to TV stations and airplay in advance of single release.

Obviously the video production company plays a big part in creating the music video because it is not the record company who makes the videos it is the video production companies. An example of a video production company is Poisonpen films, who have made videos with artists such as funeral for a friend, Fightstar, The Holloways, The Young Knives, The Pigeon Detectives and The Answer. The director for Poisonpen films is Paul Morricone.
