Research: Representation

When representing characters in any media text it is best to relate them to stereotypes. This is because,  'Stereotyping is a process of categorization, necessary to make sense of the world, and the flood of information and impressions we receive minute by minute.' (Branston and Stafford). This means that using stereotypical traits in our media produce it will make it easier for the audience to gain an understanding of the character straight away.

Walter Lippman said that there were 4 main functions of stereotyping. These are:
  • An ordering process
  • A short cut
  • An expression of our values and beliefs
  • A map of the world
In our Music Video there will only be a small number of characters, each showing certain signs so that the audience can easily recognise them and even categorise them as a stereotype. As our video is to be based on a Supermarket, the main protagonist, who will be the artist we are trying to create will have specific signs to show that he works in the supermarker, eg. name badge, shocking uniform etc. then the secondary characters will also have specific signs so that they are represented successfully too. The other band member will always be seen with a guitar, the 'manager' character in a suit and 'customers' wearing casual clothing and pushing a trolley/basket with them. All these different signs should allow the audience to follow the narrative behind the video and understand what each characters role is without any thought.

Feedback - 6/12/09

Good group - some well chosen case studies and good research on branding . However other groups have alot more on their blogs - are you working on this as homework? Remember also all members of the group must equally contribute or face getting a grade U!

Research -

- Your research on music video needs more work - remember to reference Goodwin and Fraser's ideas ( in your pack)

- outline in detail your target audience (demographics and psychographics) also use Maslow to discuss how your product appeals to its audience ( get an image of the pyramid on the internet.) Also include some graphs/charts on your questionnaire findings.

- is your genre of music popular? Look at some album charts from the last few years?

- You maybe also need a little more on the conventions of indie/pop music videos ( a subgenre of music video) -detailed analysis

- sum up your artists brand image - in detail.

Planning needs to be done now - see the last two pages on the 'before you blog' sheets. See me if you need clarification of what you need to do.

We have decided that as one of our group members (James) works in Tesco Burnley, this would be a good location to shoot the majority of our Music Video. We have put a letter together which has been sent to the Store Manager (Jason) asking for his permission to film. The letter can be found below:
